JOHN PAXSON

John played for Kettering Alter High School for Coach Joe Petrocelli.  He was an outstanding player for Notre Dame and selected All American in 1982 and 1983. Paxson ranked as best guard in college basketball in 82 -83. He led Notre Dame in scoring with 17.7 scoring average, 3.9 assists and 37.7 minutes. He led the Irish in scoring in 17 game, including career-high-tying 30 against Valparaiso and played more minutes than any player in Notre Dame History. John tied the Irish record by starting 85 straight games over his last three seasons.

John was drafted first by the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA in 1983. He played nine years of his 11 NBA seasons as a player with the Chicago Bulls and garnered 3 NBA Championship rings (1991, 1992, 1993). For his career he averaged 7.2 points, 3.6 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 772 games, including 369 starting assignments, shooting .449 from the floor, .335 from the three point line and .804 from the free throw line helping the Bulls to franchise record of 61 victories in 1990-91.

John was responsible for one of the most memorable shots in NBA history in the 1993 NBA Finals sinking a game-winning-and series winning three pointer with 3.9 seconds remaining to defeat the Phoenix Suns in Phoenix, giving the Bulls

 
 

 

 

their third straight NBA World Championship. He later served as an assistant coach for the Bulls for a short time and then went into broadcasting the Bull’s games. John was named Executive Vice President of Basketball Operation for the Bulls April 14, 2003.

John’s father Jim played two NBA seasons in the 1950’s. John and his wife, Carolyn, reside in Lake Bluff, Illinois, with their sons, Ryan and Drew.
