FRED SCHAUS

Fred Schaus has made major contributions to basketball as a player in high school, in college and professionally. He has coached at all levels and been an administrator on the college and professional scene. Fred led Newark High School to the state championship in 1943. As a player in college he earned All-American status at West Virginia University. Afterwards he played five years for the Ft. Wayne Pistons and six months with the New York Knicks. He became head coach at West Virginia University for six years where his teams won six Southern Championships. W. VA. University lost in the NCAA Finals at Louisville in 1959, 70-71. Coach Schaus had the privilege of coaching Jerry West and Rod Hundley. Fred became coach of the Los Angeles Lakers where he served for seven years. Under his tenure the Lakers won four Western Division Championships. In 1976 he became General Manager of the Lakers; Fred was named head coach at Purdue University in 1972. In 1981 he returned to W. VA. as Athletic Director. Schaus has received numerous honors from W. Va. University and the NCAA for his leadership in administration and athletics. He has remained in Morgantown, W Va. since his retirement.
