UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON NIT CHAMPS 1962 & 1968

During the golden age of Dayton basketball, the Dayton Flyers won the NIT in 1962 and 1968. In the Championship game of the 1962 NIT, The University of Dayton defeated St. John’s University 73-67.This team was coached by Hall of Famer Tom Blackburn who succumbed to cancer a few years later. Under Coach Don Donoher, The University of Dayton team defeated the University of Kansas 61-48 in the 1968 Championship game. This was an era when the NIT was considered the most prestigious tournament for college basketball. Coach Donoher is the only coach to have taken his Alma Mater to the championship game after appearing in the tournament as a player.
